Rays' Colin Poche: First hold since return

    1h ago

Poche didn't allow a baserunner while throwing a scoreless eighth inning to earn a hold Thursday against the Cubs.

Thursday's outing marked Poche's fourth outing since being activated from the injured list. He has only two strikeouts while issuing two free passes across four innings in that span, though he has yet to surrender an earned run. Poche will remain in a high-leverage role, but he isn't likely to factor significantly into the saves picture for the Rays barring injury to Pete Fairbanks.

Rays' Josh Lowe: Key knock as pinch hitter

    1h ago

Lowe went 1-for-1 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored Thursday against the Cubs.

Lowe began the game on the bench with lefty Justin Steele on the mound but entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. He made an immediate impact with an RBI single and also tallied his first stolen base of the season. Lowe has gone only 2-for-18 since being activated from the injured list June 5 while striking out eight times.

Mets' Christian Scott: Likely stuck at Triple-A, for now

    1h ago

Scott allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six over 3.2 innings for Triple-A Syracuse against Lehigh Valley on Wednesday.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said earlier this week -- prior to Scott's outing Wednesday -- that the plan was for Scott to remain at Syracuse for the time being, per Alex Smith of SNY. "We're still having conversations, but with all the off days we have coming up, we feel like a five-man rotation is what's best for us moving forward," Mendoza said. The 24-year-old Scott has struck out 49 batters in 34 innings with Syracuse this season, though he has also struggled to keep the ball in the yard, both at Triple-A and in his brief time in the majors so far. He should be up again this season, but the organization seems to be pumping the brakes on an imminent return.

  • Mark Leiter CHC RP

Cubs' Mark Leiter: Struggles in loss

    1h ago

Leiter (2-4) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk while retiring just two batters to take the loss Thursday against the Rays. He struck out one.

Chicago starter Justin Steele tossed six scoreless innings but his effort was quickly wasted by Leiter, who couldn't get out of the seventh. The righty has allowed runs in each of his last two relief appearances, which has pushed his ERA up from 3.20 to 4.44. Leiter had a sub-4.00 ERA each of the last two seasons for the Cubs, so while he's struggled some lately, his track record suggests that better days will be ahead. He will also likely stick in a high-leverage role as he attempts to get back on track.

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Crushed in loss

    1h ago

Nola (8-3) took the loss to the Red Sox on Thursday, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 3.2 innings.

Nola had two disastrous innings, allowing four runs in both the second and fourth. The fourth inning was especially rough, as he surrendered a three-run homer to Tyler O'Neill and was unable to complete the frame. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the eight earned runs allowed by Nola tied a career high, and his season ERA climbed from 2.77 to 3.48. Despite the rise in ERA, Nola had previously rattled off five consecutive quality starts and owns a 1.08 WHIP and 78:24 K:BB in 14 outings. He will look to rebound next Tuesday in a home matchup with the Padres.
