Ct tt SiM Im PiHall Key Large; Abbott Costello Meet Frankenstein FUNERAL DIRECTORS Mickey Neilan a cutter at MGM since the war, wrote a story titled "W'atch the Birdie," about an amateur cameraman, which the studio has bought for Red Skelton. Now if they'd only hire Mickey's old man to help make It, we'd all be happy. Metro Is trying to buy "Look Ma, I'm Dancing" for Ann Miller. RKO was interested in this property for Danny Kaye and Ginger Rogers some time ago. When I asked Spencer Tracy what he was going to the Mayo Clinic for, he laughed and said, "I ain't." His most amusing experiences in London were Sunday picnics.

On the first outing, he picked a place to unpack the hamper, then thought an adjoining pasture looked greener. He jumped the fence and had the picnic there. Later he learned the pasture belonged to Winston Churchill, and says Speace, "His cows were mighty friendly." "Why didn't you go to the house, introduce yourself, and get the rights to play Churchill on the screen?" I asked. "You're about the only guy I know who could do it." Dorothy Griffin, Tracy's secretary for seven years, has written a book called "Pardon My Pink Slip" and it's not about that portion of her wardrobe which is in seclusion when she's dressed either. FROM THOSE CONCERNED Bob Mitchum won't come before the District Attorney before Sept, 8.

David Seiznick, who owns half of Mifchum's contract, said, "Let's not condemn him until he's proved guilty. The guy deserves a hearing. Bob must be a sick man. If he is guilty, let's find the basic reason that led him into it Jet's find the root of the evil. I'm reluctant to condemn anyone before he's had a hearing.

I don't think we should hit a man on the head until we learn the facts." Mitchum's studio (RKO) says, "If he has dene it, we hope he will come clean and confess, and like Barney Ross promise never to do it again." Bob is starred in three un-released pictures. The two at RKO, in which $3,500,000 have been invested, are "Rachel and the Stranger," with Bill Holden and Loretta Young, and "Blood on the Moon" with Barbara Bel Geddes The other is "The Red Pony," which Bob made at Republic writh Myrna Loy. SOMETHING NEW Our producers have discovered the circus, just as they did baseball. Pictures about the big show are in preparation all over town. Universal-International owns "Gus the Great," Abbott and Costello will do "Africa Screams," Harry Sherman owns "Ring Horse," Metro "The Hired Man's Elephant" ORIENTAL.

It's a dream. Ludwig Bemelmans was there; we had a wonderful time. Lunched yesterday with Dorothy Di Frasso in Naples. She is coming to America, so I'm taking over her home while she's gone. It's a little quieter here since the Darryl Zanucks, Charles Feld-man, Gene Markey, Jules Stein, Anatole Litvak and Elsa Maxwell have left.

With that cast, I leave to your imagination what it must have been. When you have a minute drop me a line better still, come over to visit us for a couple of weeks. Linda joins in sending love." We all know now why Ty and Linda's marriage was postponed. It wasn't his studio or Annabella. But the strings were pulled from Hollywood.

BACK TO WORK Eddie Mannix returns to his desk in a few days. He is completely well again, and will confer with Metro's William F. Rogers to set picture releases for winter and spring. I hope Eddie will take it easier than he has for the last two or three years. 0 Mario Lanza will be mighty busy for the next six months.

He and his wife expect a baby in December. Mario wTill do "This Summer Is Yours" at Metro with Kathryn Grayson. He rented Harry Savoy's ranch in the Valley. Savoy, incidentally, is in New York rehearsing a new show. Don Hartman's 17-year-old daughter Mimi, who was stricken with polio, is expected to be home today, but will be confined to her bed for a month.

She became ill shortly after the sneak preview of "Every Girl Should Be Married," the story she first brought to the attention of her father. Adolphe Menjou has an offer to play "Front Page" in England, but he's a little reluctant since "The Glass Menagerie" was a flop in London. Adolphe goes to Muskogee, in October to receive an award from five Indian tribes not the Hollywood kind, but real ones. He has offers to make pictures in France, but says, "What would I gain with the value of francs today?" Released by the Chlcaeo Tribune-New York Jicws Syndicate, 1948 AERO. Montana-14th St.
