-rrr- PAGF ISA THE DAILY ITEM SUMTER SC SATURDAY OCT a 1M2 Obituaries Hearing Monday In Bomb Plot Inlet allegedly instigated murder in revenge for the slaying of his mother and stepfather in an armed robbery authorities said Tyner was under a death sentence for the 1978 slayings of Myrtle and Bill Moot of Horry County They were killed during a robbery at their country store Cimo and a co-defendant James Cooper are free on bail and awaiting trial Two other defendants in the case are inmates Gerald Clifton McCormick 47 of Myrtle Beach serving 30 years for housebreaking burglary grand larceny and car theft and Jack Martin 42 of Conway serving 18 months for intimidation of a witness in Horry County COLUMBIA AP A pretrial hearing has been slated Monday for the six men accused in the alleged vengence slaying of death row inmate Rudolph Tyner Deputy Solicitor Richard A Harpootlian said the hearing to be conducted by Richland County Chief Magistrate Walter Jones will take the form of a magisterial inquiry Under a new rule of the South Carolina Supreme Court a preliminary hearing is not required But because this is a death penalty case a hearing will be held to protect the defendants due process rights Harpootlian said The suspects four of whom are inmates at the Central Correctional Institution have been charged in connection with the Sept 12 bombing death of Tyner who was killed in his CCI cell when a booby-trapped radio exploded Tyner's death was first thought by officials to be accidental But prosecutors now contend it was a "contract-revenge hit" Facing the death penalty in the case are inmates Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins and Charles Lee Gaskins 47 of Prospect in Florence County has been called "the bloodiest by police He is serving 10 life sentences Lee 35 is serving 25 years for armed robbery in Horry County Another defendant Richard Anthony "Tony" Cimo 36 a bricklayer from Murrells $13965 In Goods Taken In Break-In A man arrested by the South Carolina Highway Patrol for driving under the influence was found to have what appeared to be marijuana in his possession Jerold Wayne Graghead 19 of Shaw Air Force Base was searched after his initial arrest and the suspected marijuana was found reports said An open bottle of liquor also was found in his car reports said The county department charged Graghead with simple possession of marijuana and violation of South Carolina liquor laws A Dalzell man General Lee Cooper 20 of Route 4 Box 189-R-A was arrested yesterday and charged with pointing a firearm The arrest stemmed from an Oct 17 incident at the Zippy Mart on 441 Cooper is accused of threatening to shoot Charles Butler 25 of Route 1 Box 19 Dalzell Cooper was taken to the Sumter County Correctional Center and was awaiting a bond hearing this morning ing north on Washington Street driven by Victoria Denise Delay 22 of Route 5 the collision sent Ms Holloman's car into a car occupied by Willie Pressley 42 of 121 Carver St which was stopped at the intersection Ms Holloman was treated and released at Tuomey Hospital A car reported stolen from Sumter High School yesterday was recovered later in the day Beth Simmonds 49 of 14 Pathfinder Drive said that initially she thought her car was taken as a practical joke stemming from Sumter Homecoming celebration this weekend However after a report was made to city police a man who knew the car had been taken saw it blocked in traffic John Geddings of Route 7 Box 280 apprehended a juvenile who was driving the car and held him until police arrived The case is being handled through Family Court A break-in Thursday night at the Inside Out store 87 Market St resulted in the theft of $13965 in merchandise The manager of the store Joel Merry 42 of 5 Lenoir St said that the missing merchandise included portable heaters ceiling fans stereo equipment and a parlor stove An investigation by city police indicated that a large vehicle was used to transport the stolen items In other reports a car driven by Julia Holloman 34 of Route 5 Box 71-A was charged with failure to yield right of way after an accident at Washington Street and Hampton Avenue Reports said that Ms Holloman was attempting to turn left onto Hampton Avenue when a pickup truck coming from the opposite direction on Washington Street turned obscuring her vision The pickup left the scene Ms Holloman's car was hit by a car travel The Forecast For 8 a EOT Rain I Snowf? include a daughter Shirley Rosse a son Willie Junious four sisters Patricia Kelley Mary Watson and Sarah Audrey all of New Jersey and Lila Mae Watson of Philadelphia Pa two brothers James Henry will officiate Fleming Funeral Home of Summerton is in charge of arrangements RICHARD JORDON THOM AS VILLE NC -Richard Jordon Sr 79 of Thomasville NC died Wednesday at his home after a long illness Born in Georgetown Mr Jordon had lived in South Carolina most of his life and had been a resident of Thomasville NC for the past two years He was a member of Antioch Union Methodist Church in Rimini and was past president and member of the usher board and former member chairman of the trustee board Survivors include four daughters Emaline Bod-den Luvenia Jordon Mary Lee Jordon and Sally Ann Brengion all of New York City three sons the Rev Richard Jordon Jr of the home Sgt Robert Jordon with the US Army in Germany and Roosevelt Jordon of New York City a sister Ella Jordon of Johnsonville will be at 3 pm Sunday at St James United Methodist 60 spokeswoman Becky McSwain said the perpetual splitting of atoms known as fission occurred early Friday morning She said control rods which keep a rein on the mtclear process were lifted Thursday night so that fission could begin It took nine hours for the splitting of atoms to start The plant located 26 miles north of Columbia will be slowly brought up to 5 percent power for three weeks of testing The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the loading of uranium fuel and low-power testing in August Further approval is needed to Barn Fire Before Fuel Tanks Blow Firemen from the Dalzell Fire Department were able to COT tain a bam fire early this morning before flames Ignited some fuel tanks behind the bam Capt Seth Dyke said firemen received a call at 4:06 am about a fire in a bam on US 521 north of Dalzell The cinder-block tin-roofed bam was owned by McLaughlin Damage to the building was estimated at $20000 Damage to the contents which Dyke said included hay and oil was estimated at $2000 Dyke said the firemen had to act quickly to keep the fuel tanks behind the bam cooled down to prevent an explosion Firemen from the
