Exactly two years later he pitched an inning of relief for the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field in Atlanta.

Ligtenberg relieved Braves closer Mark Wohler in the ninth inning Tuesday after Wohlers blew a 2-1 lead against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the Pirates leading 3-2, the 6-2, 205-pounder from Rapid City, S.D., got an out, walked a batter and gave up a two-run single just over shortstop. He then got the last out on a popup to Fred McGriff at first base. One year after pitching for former Braves catcher Greg Olson, who was Minneapolis Loons manager in 1995, Ligtenberg wound up in the Braves farm system at Class A Durham. Last year, he was 7-4 wih 20 saves and a 2.41 earned run average.

Ligtenberg was the sixth Braves pitcher used in the game. Scooter Pursley AMERICAN LEAGUE Tuesday's Games Milwaukee 5, Seattle 3 Texas 12, Boston 2 Detroit at Cleveland, (n) Kansas City 6, N.Y. Tim Bogar, batting .417 in August, hit a two-run homer, James Mouton drove in three runs and Chuckie Carr had three hits, including a solo home run. The NL Central-leading Astros finished with 16 hits as they opened an 11-game homestand, their longest of the season. Hampton (10-7) overcame a career-high seven walks. He allowed five hits and struck out six in seven innings. The Astros scored four times in the third inning off AlLeiter (8-9).

GIANTS 7, REDS 3: Wilson Alvarez struck out nine in 7 1-3 solid innings and drove in a run with his first major league hit. Alvarez (2-1), making his third start since the July 31 trade that brought him with pitchers Roberto Hernandez and Danny Darwin from the Chicago White Sox for six minor leaguers, allowed three runs on seven hits. Hernandez relieved Alvarez with two runners on and one out in the eighth, and got five outs for his first NL save. CARDINALS 5, METS 2: Slumping Mark McGwire homered, doubled and drove in three runs. McGwire was just 3-for-35 since being traded from Oakland to the Cardinals on July 31 before breaking loose.

He led off the fourth inning with his second NL homer for a 3-1 lead, then hit a two-run double in the fifth. Tom Pagnozzi, playing his first game since April 29, hit a two-run homer for St. Louis. ROYALS 6, YANKEES 4: Dean Palmer homered and drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals ended the New York Yankees' three-game winning streak. Palmer, who is 10-for-21 with runners in scoring position and has 16 RBIs in 18 games since coming over in a trade with Texas, singled home a run in the fourth, opened the sixth with his 17th homer, and had a go-anead two-run double in the seventh.

ORIOLES 8, ATHLETICS 0: Scott Erickson pitched a three-hitter and Rafael Palmeiro had three hits, including a three-run homer. Palmeiro's 24th home run highlighted a four-run first inning that boosted Baltimore to its 12th win in 15 games. The victory pushed the Orioles a season-high 32 games over .500 (73-41). Oakland has lost 11 of 16 and have been blanked in six of its last 21 games. The Athletics are 2-8 against Baltimore, having been outscored 66-19 and outho-mered 15-4.

Both benches emptied in the bottom of the eighth after Oakland pitcher Dane Johnson threw a pitch behind Jeff Reboulet, who voiced his displeasure to catcher Brent Mayne. No punches were thrown, but Reboulet and Mayne were ejected from the game. Erickson (14-5) struck out eight and walked one in his second shutout of the season and 11th of his career. He's 3-0 with an 0.94 ERA in his last five starts. RANGERS 12, RED SOX 2: The Texas Rangers showed off for former president George Bush on by routing the Boston Red Sox for the second consecutive game, scoring 10 runs in the first four innings.

A day after collecting out 15 hits and beating Boston 8-3, the Rangers added 17 more hits to win their third consecutive game. Bobby Witt (11-8) pitched his third complete game and the Rangers' second straight as Texas improved to 5-0 at Fenway Park this season. Fernando Tatis had four hits, three runs and four RBIs, Tom Goodwin had three hits and three RBIs and Lee Stevens had three hits, three runs and two RBIs as the Rangers pounced on Aaron Sele (11-9) early. Before the game, the Rangers acquired right-handed North Dakotan Rick Helling from Florida for lefty Ed Vosberg. BREWERS 5, MARINERS 3: Rookie Steve Woodard avenged a recent pounding by Seattle.

Woodard (2-1) allowed only four hits in seven innings. He struck out six, walked one and gave up solo homers to Griffey and Russ Davis, his 17th. On Aug. 2, Woodard was tagged for six runs in two innings by the Mariners in a 14-4 loss. Reliever Bob Wickman preserved a 4-3 lead in the eighth, escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam.

He got Edgar Martinez to ground into a forceout at the plate and struck out Jay Buhner on a 3-2 pitch. Doug Jones got three outs for his 24th save. WHITE SOX 8, ANGELS 5: Albert Belle homered twice to end one of the longest power droughts of his career. Belle's two-run shot, his 23rd of the season, capped a three-run seventh inning. Ray Durham and Dave Martinez singled to finish Jason Dickson (11-5), who lost for the first time since June 26.

Frank Thomas greeted reliever Shigetoshi Hasegawa with a go-ahead sacrifice fly that made it 5-4 and then Belle followed with his second homer to left center. Belle hit a solo shot in the second, his first homer since July 18, ending a 21-game homerless streak. Neagle a chance to become the NL's first 17-game winner and denied Wohlers the 100th save of his career. Wohlers (4-5) took the loss instead, and he had only himself to blame. With one out in the ninth and the Braves holding a 2-1 lead, Jason Kendall singled and stole second before Wohlers walked the next two hitters, Dale Sveum and Mark Smith.

Ward, who entered the game in the seventh during a double switch, followed with a blistering line drive to center that sent Wohlers diving to the ground while the tying and go-ahead runs came home. The Braves had won 61 consecutive games this season when leading after the eighth. Al Martin padded the Pirates' lead with a two-out, two-run single against Kerry Ligtenberg, making his major league debut. PHILLIES 5, ROCKIES 0: Matt Beech ended his string of 22 straight starts without a victory. Beech (1-7) had not won since beating Atlanta in his first major league start on Aug.

8, 1996. He was winless in his first 15 starts this season. Beech retired the first 13 batters, and allowed just four hits in seven innings. He walked none and struck out six. The Phillies have won three in a row and 11 of 14.

Colorado has lost three straight. Rico Brogna had three hits and drove in two runs, and Mickey Morandini had two hits and drove in a run.
