<![CDATA[Tahlequah Daily Press: Obituaries]]> (1)

HULBERT [mdash] Jerry "Cherokee" Ice Jr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and decorated combat engineer, rode off into the sunset on May 8, 2024, at the age of 57. Born on October 25, 1966, in Tahlequah to Verbia Cheek and Jerry Ice Sr, Cherokee was a true native son of Oklahoma, imbued with the spirit of the Cherokee people and a love for wide-open skies. For 38 years, Cherokee shared a life of adventure and laughter with his wife, Stephanie, who stood by him through thick and thin. He always told her, he loved her more than cornbread. They created their own world filled with the joyous chaos of their children James, Jerry III (alongside his wife Natalie), Jaydon, Jessica (and her husband Micah), Jordan, Jaelynn, and Jacob, a gaggle that could give any sitcom family a run for their money. His humor and heart trickled down to his grandchildren Jonathon, Jonas, Julia, Jerry IV, Serana, Johanna, Jace, Kaelum, Wren, Oaks, Jasper, Caster, Persona, and Solace, who will miss their patriarch's larger-than-life presence. He also had a multitude of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cherokee is survived by his father Jerry Ice Sr and sisters, Lila, Donna, Gerri Lynn, Tonnett, Caldia. Cherokee was preceded in death by his strong mother, Verbia Cheek, his big-hearted father-in-law, Jim Stacy, and his cherished daughter-in-law, Felicia; these pivotal figures no doubt welcomed him with open arms and possibly a stern word for being late to the reunion.Cherokee served his country with honor and pride for 23 years as a Combat Engineer in the Army. He wasn't just good at building bridges - metaphorically, he was the human equivalent of duct tape, keeping everything and everyone together. Cherokee channeled his lifelong love of his Native American culture into everything he did, from Stomps and powwows to preserving traditions. He could swing a hammer with the finesse of a craftsman, rev a motorcycle with the coolness of any movie star, and whisper to horses like a bona fide horse charmer - probably even with a punchline.Cherokee was often described as friendly and generous - traits that shone through whether he was helping a stranded motorist or dishing out servings of wisdom to his kids like they were slices of pie. Handy was an understatement; the man could fix anything.A story of Jerry's life would be incomplete without mentioning his humor, which was indeed infectious. He never missed an opportunity to inject a bit of wit into everyday situations. As a comedian in his own right, his performances were exclusive to friends, family, and unsuspecting grocery clerks, winning him countless chuckles and groans over the years.Cherokee's life was a testament to the power of positive thinking, the strength of community, and the simple joy of a well-timed quip.Let's not say that Jerry "Cherokee" Ice passed away; let's say he took the scenic route to the Stomp in the sky, probably stopping to enjoy the view and make a couple of wisecracks along the way. His legacy of laughter and love will echo in the echoes of his family's memories, the tales at the local bar, and the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him. The stories will be many, the laughter loud, and the void immeasurable. Ride on, Jerry, and may your final road be as free and exhilarating as you were.

<![CDATA[Tahlequah Daily Press: Obituaries]]> (2)

TAHLEQUAH [mdash] Norma Vinyard-Rose was born in a little town called Ola, Arkansas on May 23, 1938. She was one of eight children; the daughter of Lennis Vinson and Mary Ellen (Barret) Benefield. After graduating from Ola High School, she was excited to venture out to new territory. She moved to Chicago for a period of time before settling in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She met Wayne Carr at her local church and was married in 1959 until 1968. There, she began working as a bookkeeper at Silvey Insurance Company until her retirement in 1997. Norma had a love for life and never let anything hold her back from accomplishing her goals. She had a way of lighting up a room and loved to go square dancing. It was then, she caught the eye of a young man called Ted. Their love grew into a beautiful marriage joining together Norma and Theodore Edgar Vinyard, on November 25, 1970 at their home in Tulsa. Together, they shared over 33 years of memories. After Ted passed in 2004, she would marry her good friend, Leonard Rose, in April of 2005. Leonard and Norma found comfort in each other's company and shared six years of companionship before his passing in 2011. One of Norma's greatest joys in life was being a mother. She was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Deanna and Jennifer. She was grateful to later gain the title of grandma to six grandkids and ten great-grandkids. She loved every moment spent with her family whether it be holiday get-togethers or spending time taking in the outdoors. Norma loved to travel and took many family vacations, going to Alaska, Colorado, England, Paris, London, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and more. Some of her favorite memories were taking the RV out, hiking in Colorado and trips to Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. The grandkids loved to spend the summers at grandma's house. She would take them to the park, play around the farm or taking the boat out on the lake. Her ranch was home to many, she always had an open door. She had a warm heart, never failing to lend a helping hand, and was fiercely protective of those she loved. She had a way of making you feel comfortable, often finding ways to relate to your story or joke to bring a smile to your face. She had the greatest since of humor and the most contagious giggle. Despite the challenges in life, she kept a smile on her face and happiness in her heart; not shy in getting on the dance floor at the Senior Citizen events. A Christian by faith, she finished her race here on earth and was called to her eternal home on Sunday, May 5, 2024 in Tahlequah, OK at the age of 85 years old. The unfailing love and joy she brought to our lives will forever be held in our hearts.Norma went on to join her parents, her husband, Theodore "Ted" Edgar Vinyard and later husband, Leonard Rose, three brothers, Cletus Benefield, Billy Joe Benefield and Clayton Lavan Benefield, three sisters, Reba Riley, Wanda Pettit and Faye Bradford, two brothers-in-law, Jim Riley and Earl Bradford, along with two sisters-in-law, Ruby Lee Benefield and Laura Benefield. Those left to remember her include her two daughters, Deanna Clark of Skiatook, OK and Jennifer Rose and husband Rick of Tahlequah, OK and one sister, Mae Mills of Sperry, OK. Her legacy lives on through her six adored grandchildren, Angela Hayes and Chris Teague, Amy Hayes and husband Jason Fowler, Ashlie Sebert and husband John, Jonathon Rose and wife Rebecca, James Rose and Allison Rose, ten great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and loved ones.Funeral services for Norma Vinyard-Rose will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 2:00pm at Reed-Culver Chapel with Reverend David Wiens officiating. A visitation will be held prior to services beginning at 11:00am. She will be laid to rest at Tahlequah City Cemetery.Serving as pallbearers are Jonathon Rose, James Rose, Triston Teague, Chris Teague, Jason Fowler and John Sebert. Her honorary pallbearers include Marcus Underwood, Victor Sebert and Patrick Sebert.

<![CDATA[Tahlequah Daily Press: Obituaries]]> (8)

TAHLEQUAH [mdash] TAHLEQUAH [mdash] Born in Muskogee on February 9, 1937, Kirk Ewell Boatright was raised in Fort Gibson by his parents, Ewell and Ruth Yeager Boatright, with his sister, Ruth Ann Boatright Stockton. He had many titles in his life. He was a professor, businessman, entrepreneur, author, and engineer. To those closest to him he was a husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, storyteller, coffee drinker, and friend to many in the Tahlequah and Fort Gibson communities. He was fearlessly passionate for the towns that built him and the rich family ties woven into their histories. He was a man of many talents and stories. He loved The Phantom of the Opera and got to see it many times with the original cast in London. He drew great joy from taking his loved ones to experience the production for themselves. He was notorious for helping others create lasting memories, whether it was as big as celebrating Father's Day with his son, Neal, in London, or singing "I See The Moon" and drinking an RC Cola with peanuts in it with his daughter, Ann Marie. He was a man of intentionality and purpose in all of his actions. He was a force to be reckoned with but that could not keep him from his role as "Grandpa Kirk Boatright" to his granddaughter, Sara, as he happily played with Barbie dolls on many occasions. He loved going on shopping trips to Harrods while on his travels and was always sure to pick something up to bring back to his grandkids. His shopping sprees often led to some crazy purchases but his best and most simple were the British tea treats he would bring back to share with his grandson, Rob, paired with co*ke in a glass bottle. His most joyous and ornery times were spent with his grandchildren, whether it was creating Christmas joy in Eureka Springs or mischievously putting a dollop of shaving cream on his granddaughter, Ashley's nose as she watched him shave. His children and grandchildren eagerly anticipated his phone call every year as he would excitedly sing his best rendition of "Happy Birthday," no matter where he was in the world. Of all of his numerous roles, he was a memory maker first and foremost for all he loved. His various treks took him across the world but Scotland was his favorite. In his many adventures and successes in his life, his fondest was being on the committee that chose Pistol Pete as the mascot for his beloved Oklahoma State University. He often told the story of driving to Bully Good Saddle Shop in Muskogee to purchase Pete's first ever pair of chaps. He enjoyed taking his kids and grandkids to experience OSU football games and loved teaching them the chants and traditions. He fondly spoke of his time as Student Association and Student Senate president during OSU's transition from Oklahoma A&M College to Oklahoma State University and proudly bled orange all the days of his life. He was integral in bringing the optometry school to Northeastern State University during his tenure as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was proud of his time at NSU, where he became a member of the Circle of Excellence and was later honored as an NSU Centurion. He obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from OSU. He later earned his doctorate in engineering from the University of Arkansas. He owned his own company where he worked as a petroleum consultant from 1980 until his death. He obtained a patent, authored several petroleum engineering books, and taught thousands of petroleum professionals across the world. He proudly served as the Lay Leader for the Tahlequah First United Methodist Church for many years. He was a globetrotter, an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, a proud Cowboy, a history buff, a faithful Dano's attendee for coffee "meetings" with his dear friends, and a go-getter. He brought the highest level of ambition to every opportunity he encountered and worked tirelessly to empower others to achieve their dreams. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Linda Barnes Boatright, his children, Ann Marie Boatright Ryals & Bob, and Neal Boatright & Lori, his grandchildren, Ashley Boatright Moore & Chris, Rob & Chia Ryals, Kelsi Downing Camden & David, Alec Downing & Miranda, Tyler Downing, and Sara Ryals, great-grandchildren Liam Ryals, Krew Camden, Remington Downing, Ronin Ryals, Kase Camden, Jax Downing, Mia Camden, and Lorelei Downing, his niece, Mindy Stockton Hendrix and nephew, Darin Stockton, his great-niece and nephews, his children with his wife Linda, Gary Hix, Trisha Hix Boswell & Lanny, Laura Hix, and Shonda Hix, his and Linda's grandchildren, Tylor, Rusty, Amber, Lindsey, Seth, Thomas, Wyatt, Garrett, Hannah, and Noah, and many great-grandchildren. Dr. Kirk Ewell Boatright, passed from this life to be with Jesus, his parents, his sister, and his brother-in-law, Tony Stockton on April 3, 2024 in Tahlequah, OK. His life was celebrated on April 9 at Green Country Funeral Home in Tahlequah, OK. Interment followed at Citizens Cemetery in Fort Gibson, OK. For the last time, "Pistols firing, go Pokes!"

<![CDATA[Tahlequah Daily Press: Obituaries]]> (16)

TAHLEQUAH[mdash] was born September 1, 1931 in Cookson, OK to Ben and Sue (Pettit) Parnell and left this world on March 21, 2024 surrounding by his family at the age of 92. Jack lived all over Cherokee County growing up as his father had a wanderlust and knew Tahlequah like the back of his hand. He married Carolyn Anderson in 1957 and they created a wonderful family. Jack's life has been a long history from sailor in the US Navy, bull rider, jockey, mechanic (he could fix ANYTHING), to cattleman, and loving husband and father. The love of horses was born in his soul and the only time he didn't have one was when he was working for Boeing Aircraft in Washington state. In fact when he moved his family back to Oklahoma he bought a horse before he bought a house! He had many horses over the years but Jubal and Jess were his two favorites. Jack had a major influence on Carolyn's younger siblings and was dearly loved by her parents, Homer and Lillian Anderson. Most of his friends, including his two best buds Sonny Baker and Don Rutherford have gone on but he was content with his life on the ranch with Carolyn, his horses and cattle. He had been all over the world and didn't care to be anywhere other than Cherokee County. There have been very few men who were tougher or more hardworking than Jack and he set a fine example of how to be a man for his children and grandchildren. Jack was the youngest of seven children and is the last to pass on. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Sue Parnell, four sisters, Faye, Pauline, Elizabeth and Betty and two brothers Andy and Sam Parnell. His memory lives on and is cherished by his wife of the home, Carolyn and three children. Jackie Parnell and life partner Ed Spears, Mitch and wife Sharon Chambers-Parnell, Jan Parnell-Grant and husband Kelly all of Tahlequah. Seven grandchildren, Michelle Parnell-Newton and husband Josh, Kylie Parnell-Kinsey and husband Corey, Bethany Parnell-Wheeler and husband Matt, Kaleb Parnell, Breque Parnell-Bellman and husband Elmer, Kaelyn Grant-Shirey and husband Ron, Ben Grant and step grandson Brent Hoffman and step-granddaughter Christina Stewart along with seven great grandchildren and like a son, brother-in-law, Ron Anderson, sisters-in-law Sharon Seratt and Linda Burns. <![CDATA[Tahlequah Daily Press: Obituaries]]> (21)

HULBERT [mdash] Daryl Wayne Bailey passed away January 30, 2024. He didn't want an obituary, saying those who knew him would hear about it. Just as in life, he was humble and happy to stay in the background. Those of us who knew him would agree he deserves much more. Daryl was born in Tulsa on December 13, 1949, and was a Cherokee County resident since the age of five. His parents, Woodrow and Ava (Wilkey) Bailey, had extended families in Cherokee County and a desire to farm. Wood ran a dozer business to supplement their farm income and Ava was well-known for her farming expertise, friendliness, and a deep desire to help others. Daryl and his brothers learned the value of hard work and the strong love of family from their parents. Daryl always helped others. His family would tell you he helped "widows, orphans and the monks", when in reality he would help anyone in need. He never let it be known if he were inconvenienced as he took helping others as his responsibility and was glad to do so. While in high school he worked for Ozark Nursery. After finishing school, he worked as an iron worker, started a dairy farm, and eventually found himself back where he started: in the nursery business. He and his wife, Deborah, started a wholesale container plant nursery, SugarTree Nursery. From their first quonset, they knew they had found their passion. The business grew every year, which spoke to their expertise, commitment, and strong work ethic. After 22 years in the business, they sold SugarTree and retired to travel and spend time with family. Daryl and Deborah (Akerman) Bailey were married 37 years. Daryl is survived by their children, Scott (Heidi) Cobb, Rachel Bailey, and Rebecca (David) Mosher. When the grandchildren and then great-grandchildren began arriving, life was THE best. Daryl is survived by five grandsons, Lane (Whitney) Cobb, Braden (Alyssa) Cobb, Blake Mosher, Lucien Gamache and Grant Gamache. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Maddox, Blakely, Baker and Addy. TAHLEQUAH [mdash] In the early hours of January 5th, 2024, our precious mother, Paula Ann Tarkington Burris, had a joyful reunion in heaven with her husband. She held on until she could surprise him for his birthday. Paula was the only daughter of Oscar Paul Tarkington and Jewel Pebble Thompson Tarkington and was born on August 4, 1940 in Tahlequah Oklahoma. Her parents were life-long educators and in her early years, she lived in Porum and Fairfax while her parents taught in several schools including Gray Horse and Foraker. She attended elementary school in Fort Gibson and then completed the rest of her school years in Tahlequah, graduating in 1958. She then attended Northeastern State University and completed both a bachelor's degree in history, a master's degree in history and a certificate of school counseling. She was a staunch supporter in the power of education. While at NSU, she met her husband Lynn and was the 1959 Homecoming Queen. After graduation, she and her husband headed to Independence Missouri to start their lives. After a few years living in Independence she moved with her husband to Midwest City and supported him while he attended Law School at OU. After living in Sallisaw for several years, she and Lynn moved back to Tahlequah to raise their family and live out the rest of their lives. She and her husband were fixtures in the small town of Tahlequah for decades and were very involved with their alma mater, NSU. They were named NSU Centurions in 2012 and were proud Redmen and members of the Nifty Fifties to the end. Paula was the beloved mother of Amber and Melanie and devoted grandmother known as Gee to her granddaughters Nikki, Alli, Milanne and Landrie and was the great-grandmother of Jaxon and Jalyne.Paula loved spending time with her family and friends, Christmas and making the holidays magical for her whole family, the Nativity, horses, and had a passion for travel and adventure and seeing all things historical. She loved old homes and antiques. She loved volunteering for the Thompson House, Mornings with Jesus and doing her crossword puzzles. She enjoyed all types of music and saying the Lord's Prayer. Paula embodied faith, family, friends and fun. She always told you the truth even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear. She believed in doing the right thing, even if it was difficult. She touched countless lives as the Tahlequah ninth grade school counselor and also all of the friends of her children who spent hours, days and nights in her home. Her motto was always, 'the more the merrier'. She loved fiercely, was a devoted friend and never lost her spunk to the end.Paula was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She raised her children with love and instilled in her daughters the strong faith of God and the importance of family. She showed us that friends can be family and family can be friends. She was the one to make the magic happen. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. She is survived by her daughters Amber George (Buck), Melanie Fields (Lonny); granddaughters Nikki Downs (Collin), Alli George, Milannie Fields, and Landrie Fields her great-grandchildren Jaxon and Jalyne Downs, relatives and numerous friends. <![CDATA[Tahlequah Daily Press: Obituaries]]> (29)

TAHLEQUAH [mdash] Alvin Ray Hicks, known affectionately as Alvin to all who had the pleasure of crossing his path, embarked on his final adventure on December 18, 2023, after a spirited battle with liver cancer. Born on a sunny September day in 1960 to Tom Hicks and Ellen Ballew, in the heart of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Alvin's journey came full circle as he took his last breath in the same town that first heard his boisterous laughter.Funeral Services are Friday, December 22, 2023 in the Green Country Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Chief Joe Bunch. Interment will follow in the Sellers Mission Cemetery, open visitation from 9 AM - 8 PM Thursday with family receiving friends 5 PM - 7 PM. ON-Line condolences may be expressed at tahlequahfuneral.com Alvin's life was a masterclass in joy and mischief. He was a man who could light up a room with his humor and warm it with his selflessness. As a dedicated United Keetoowah Band Council Representative for the Tahlequah district, Alvin was known for his wise counsel, often peppered with a joke or two to ease the weight of decision-making. He truly had a servants heart and being there for his constituents was one of his greatest honors. His colleagues will surely miss his uncanny ability to diffuse tension with a well-timed quip. When he wasn't serving his community, Alvin could be found reveling in the roar of engines at Talladega, cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers with the same enthusiasm he brought to every aspect of his life. His culinary skills were legendary, especially when it came to cooking for family and friends. Alvin believed that a good meal could solve just about anything, and if it couldn't, well, at least you wouldn't be hungry while you figured it out.A true outdoorsman, Alvin cherished his time hunting. The 4th of July was his favorite time of year, a perfect excuse to gather his loved ones, friends and set off fireworks that, much like Alvin, were loud, bright, and impossible to ignore.Alvin leaves behind a tapestry of memories with his beloved wife, Donna, who stood by him through every high-speed turn life took. His legacy continues through his children, Sarah and Charles, who inherited their father's humor and heart. His granddaughter and sidekick, Eden, will no doubt grow up rivaling her granddad's legendary orneriness. Alvin's brother, Leroy, and sisters-in-law, Trish and Patsy, along with a troupe of nieces and nephews, will carry on the Hicks family tradition of laughter and love.In the spirit of Alvin's unyielding wit, let's remember him with a quote from the great Robin Williams, a man who, like Alvin, knew the power of laughter: "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it." Alvin not only kept his spark but fanned it into a flame that warmed all who knew him.Alvin was the epitome of funny, wise, and selfless—a rare combination that made him the man everyone wanted at their barbecue and the friend everyone needed in tough times. He could turn a phrase, flip a burger, and catch a fish with equal skill, and he did it all with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.So, let's not say goodbye to Alvin. Instead, let's tip our hats and raise a toast to a life well-lived and a man well-loved. After all, as Alvin would say, "I'm not here for a long time, I'm here for a good time." And what a good time it was. Cheers, Alvin. Your laughter will echo in our hearts forever.

SEMINOLE [mdash] Andrew Taylor was born on July 8, 1937, at home on the family's allotted Cherokee Homestead in Gideon, Oklahoma, to Andy and Hersie Taylor. It didn't take long for the family to start calling him A.C., a nickname that stayed with him for his entire life. After attending country schools in his elementary years, A.C. switched to school in town where he drove the school bus, a job that he was really proud of. A.C. started dating Connie Sue Tharp in high school. He graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1955 and went on to college at Northeastern State University while also working at Tahlequah Lumber Company, a job that would launch his career in the lumber business. When Connie Sue graduated in 1957, the two became engaged and were married in January of 1958. The couple moved to Tulsa where A.C. continued his career in the lumber industry. Eventually, this field took him to Canadian, TX. After years in the lumber business, A.C. was ready to branch into a new field so he started the first of several companies he would own and operate in the oil and gas industry. He was Man of the Year and his company, Taylor Oilfield Services, was Company of the Year in Canadian, TX. Eventually, A.C.'s love and knowledge of horses led him to buying, selling, racing and breeding Quarter horses. Horses he owned landed in the winner's circle over 25 times but horses he bred and sold went on to earn him a spot on the Top Producing Breeders list.A.C.'s various careers kept his family comfortable but the work he was most proud of was his work with young people. In Canadian, he coached Little League and ran the Boy Scouts, helped with the Girls Scouts, was active with the PTA, the Rotary Club and helped build a new ball complex.
