Where to stay in Berlin

Berlin has lots of great neighborhoods for you to stay in and explore. If you’re visiting Berlin for the first time, it might be best for you stay somewhere central.

Many of the attractions are in Mitte or easily connected to Mitte by Berlin’s public transport, so you should stay somewhere in that region. Here are a few hotels we recommend.

Protokoll craft beer bar in Berlin

Here’s what you can expect from Protokoll, including types of craft beer, food options, location, and more.

Basic Details

Type of Place: Bar
Allows Smoking?: No
Food options: No, but occasionally they host a food pop-up

What kinds of craft beer does Protokoll have?

In Short: 24 taps and a multi page menu of bottles both regularly changing.

Protokoll has a rotating selection of taps and bottles that does seem to follow themes. The day we went in most recently, there were a number of sour beer options on the large chalkboard menu of the types and 2 pages of the bottles.

Beyond the theme beers, there are all types of beer on offer. Most of the beer is imported and runs more to the different and varied than the standard German pils.

Non-Beer Options

The selection is rotating. On our last visit, there was one cider on tap and several bottle options of cider and non-alcoholic beers. Wine and spirits are also on on the menu, so if you’re bringing a non-beer drinker with you, they’ll still find something to drink at Protokoll.

Price?

This is a specialty place with a number of imported craft beer options and the price reflects that. 6 euros gets you most beers, but probably only at a 0.3L size.

There were some bottles that were cheaper, but there were also high alcohol specialties that ran the same price for a smaller pour.

What is Protokoll like?

When you step in off the street, you’ll enter the small main room, which has a handful of high tables with bar stools and a bar at the back also with stools. Through an archway is another small room with another handful of normal height tables.

The walls are weathered wood and look reclaimed from somewhere. The furniture is the sitting room feels pleasantly weathered and appealingly mismatched, while the hightop tables give more of a uniform vision.

The wall behind the bar is dominated by a large chalkboard sectioned into 24 little blocks. Each block describes the beer in one of the row of taps below with a name, beer type, and price for various sized pours.

Find one of the clipboards with the simple printed pages of the bottle list and non-beer options. Make your way to the bar to order from one of the bartenders there. I usually pay each round, but they did offer to open a tab.

This is not an enormous bar, but it is well visited and can be quite bustling. The lighting is low in the bar area though this adds to a more chill nighttime atmosphere rather than seeming dingy. There is wifi and a murmur of music from speakers around.

Occasionally Protokoll does events that include food. One time we went, an outside chef was there making unique grilled cheese sandwiches and homemade potato chips. Check Facebook for their upcoming events.
